WP 4 - Control and Market Operation
Research objectives and anticipated results:
The research objectives of WP4 consists of analysing, designing, testing, and evaluating different control policies that are able to mobilize a large number of flexible consumers. The control policies range from decentralized control-by-prices to centralized virtual power plants (VPP). The control policies are evaluated based on criteria related to:
The research objectives of WP4 consists of analysing, designing, testing, and evaluating different control policies that are able to mobilize a large number of flexible consumers. The control policies range from decentralized control-by-prices to centralized virtual power plants (VPP). The control policies are evaluated based on criteria related to:
- cost effectiveness
- stability, reliability, and scalability
- included incentives that will encourage consumers and balance responsible parties to get involved
- impact on security of supply, both from the DSO and TSO point of view
- impact on security of equipment
- ICT security and reliability
To analyse these aspects in detail, it is necessary to define a suitable simulation framework. As no system wide simulation environment covering the time frame of a typical domestic flexible consumer exists today, an important objective is to develop a new framework, which is suitable for analysis of flexible consumer control policies.
Hence the anticipated results are:
Innovative objectives and anticipated results:
The main innovative objectives of WP4 are to mature, test, and demonstrate the most promising control policies in real world implementations. Successful integration of new control policies and mobilization of consumers in physical power systems requires a well defined architecture to handle the huge amount of real-time communication. The anticipated results of WP4 are proof-of-concepts by real-time tests and demonstrations of different control policies using the test facilities available through the partners.
Cohesion between the research and innovative objectives and anticipated results:
The most promising policies from a research point of view will constitute the list of policies that will be subjected to proof-of-concept in the innovation part. There will be a close collaboration between research and innovation to define the most suitable structure of the control policies when it comes to real world testing.
Hence the anticipated results are:
- A system wide simulation framework covering the necessary time frame and level of detail
- In-depth analysis and evaluation of a number of control policies evaluated and validated in the simulation framework
